Shakeel Ahmad

Senior Research Associate and Research Coordinator

Mr. Shakeel Ahmed Ramay is currently Senior Research Associate at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and works in the Climate Change Study Center at SDPI which has been working extensively to help public officials and stakeholders in Pakistan to respond to the challenges posed by climate change and related opportunities for economic development, clean energy and preserving environment. The research activities undertaken by the center extend to Global perspectives with specific emphasis on Pakistan on the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change in the discourse of sustainable development. His prime role is to oversee the research activities being undertaken by the center. His research has primarily focused on thematic areas including environment, agricultural development, food security, economic challenges and impacts of climate change. He has also been involved in assessment of INGOs Intervention in NWFP and AJK Earthquake Hit AreasĒ. Currently, along with other research projects on climate change, he is also leading research studies including; Ecosystem assessment of the Central Karakoram in the Northern Areas of Pakistan, Exploring the potential of the development of renewable energy in Pakistan, Green Economy in Pakistan and Climate Change and National Security.

Shakeel has also been engaged in various national and regional forums that are currently working on climate change including the Prime Ministerís task force on Climate Change. He is an Executive Board member of Climate Action Network South Asia and a member of the core team on climate change at the Ministry of Environment, Pakistan amongst others. Shakeel was also part of Pakistanís official delegation at UNFCCC negotiations in Copenhagen, COP 15 and Cancun, COP16. He also participated in other sessions of UNFCCC e.g. Barcelona and Bangkok etc. He participated in different civil society meetings across the world e.g. Spain, Denmark, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Malaysia etc. Shakeel also attended International Leadership Program of United States of America. He also has an interest in writing articles in national newspapers. Recently he wrote articles on flood and adaptation strategy, institutional arrangements for floods and disasters and the devolution of the Ministry of Environment.

Shakeel has a postgraduate degree in Agriculture Economics. He completed his M.Sc (hons) degree from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan
