Uzma Tariq Haroon

Director SDC Unit

Uzma T. Haroon holds a Masters degree in Communication from the University of Hawaii (1991-1992), USA. She also did a Masters in Journalism from the University of Punjab (1985-1987), Lahore, and her graduation from Kinnaird College for Women, Lahore.

Ms Haroon has over 20 years of experience in media and communication. Presently she is working as Sustainable Development Conference (SDC) Coordinator at the Sustainable Development since 2003 and has been coordinating the SDC series since then. The SDPI’s SDC series is an important dimension of outreach to the general public. It has been established as a prime Conference in South Asia on development issues attracting leading intellectuals, development practitioners, communities and policy-makers working in or on South Asian issues. Ms Haroon has also been part of the team of editors who edit the conference anthologies that are then jointly published by SDPI and a publisher and then launched at the succeeding SDC.

Previously she worked with an English newspaper (The Nation) from 1987—1999. There she worked as Editor of a weekly magazine (Midweek); and, as Senior Reporter. As a practicing journalist, Ms Haroon covered the social sector including health, education, gender, environment, and population.

From February 2001 till September 2002, she worked as a national Project Manager of a UNDP project titled ‘Portrayal of Women in Media’ till the completion of the project.

With a background in media and communication, her expertise lies in writing and editing reports, preparing manuscripts for publishers, and organising regional conferences.
