Food Security: The Current Status and the Way forward

Case study on Food Security in Pakistan

A study as part of a regional project on “Food Security in SAARC” was carried out to identify the key issues effecting food security in the region. A road map was thus evolved to make interventions, and to help formulate policies on regional and national levels. The study analyzed the indicators of the state of food security. It also reviewed the policy framework, the role of regional trade, and the state of food banks and the role they play in South Asia. A set of recommendations to address the issues related to food insecurity in Pakistan were put forth at the end of the study.

  1. Productivity should be enhanced through intensive investment in research, technology and extension services
  2. Safety nets should be developed for poor but there should be no duplication of safety nets
  3. Funding for health sectors should be increased and it should not be only for HIV, cancer etc. It should also give due importance to other disease like stomach or stomach related disease.
  4. Pakistan should develop National Food Security Policy covering all the aspects of food security
  5. Regional trade in food should be facilitated through better infrastructure and concessions
  6. Food bank should give prime focus to food deficient countries
  7. Trust among all the should be build, especially between Pakistan and India
