ISLAMABAD: The Global Go To Think Tank Index’s 2016 edition was released on Thursday, which ranked the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) as one of the top 60 global independent think tanks.

According to the index, the SDPI ranks 15th among the think tanks in Southeast Asia and the Pacific and 42nd in the world’s top trans-disciplinary research think tank.

The index was released by SDPI Executive Director Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri at a launch briefing simultaneously with its launch in other world capitals.

The Global Go To Think Tank Index 2016 ranks 6,846 think tanks across the world with the ranking being done by eminent experts, policy makers and public thought leaders. The think tank and civil society program of the University of Pennsylvania conducts the ranking annually.

Briefing the media, Dr Suleri said: “This is a moment of celebration for all of Pakistan as the country’s prime think tank has earned a good name for the country by being ranked 55th of the world’s top 60 independent think tanks. This shows that independent research has value in Pakistan”.

He said SDPI is successful due to its independence, relevance, credibility and impartiality in its research and policy dissemination work.

He said the importance of independent think tanks has increased due to demands for change.

Dr Suleri said think tanks can bridge policy gaps when the political leadership across the world decide to implement populous demands which might have adverse policy impacts on the geo-political situation. Independent think tanks can provide objective analysis and evidence based policy solutions.

According to the index, SDPI has been recognised in 11 categories, for instance, it has been ranked the 42nd best trans-disciplinary research think tank in the world, the 43rd in the think tanks to watch category, and the 65th world’s top environment policy think tank for the second consecutive year and the 43rd best in quality assurance, integrity policies and procedures.

In recognition of SDPI’s work on social policy, the institute has been placed at the 99th position among the world’s top social policy think tanks for the second consecutive year. It has been ranked the 61st best institutional collaborator think tank worldwide, when it came 62nd in the same category last year.

The institute has been ranked 60th on the best use of print and electronic media and 83rd on the use of social media. The think tank secured 65th place in the advocacy and policy outreach category and was ranked 75th best for its public engagement programme for the second consecutive year.
