Council for Women Parliamentarians (CWP)

Concept Note:

Pakistan is faced with multiple problems. A populace of almost 180 million, regardless of limited resources at hand is expanding at an alarming rate of 1.80% (World Bank, 2012). As a Nation it is today locked in an intricate trap of crises starting from energy to unemployment, gender disparities, economic growth and security issues. Academia and experts agree that much of these issues stem from lack of evidence use for policy planning and weak implementation. Post 18th Amendment, a number of ministries and functions have been devolved at the provincial levels. While some functions have been assigned to federal ministries, yet the challenge of transition of policy processes from federal government to the provinces is huge for the political governments in center and the provinces. In addition women political participation also stays a dilemma. SDPI believes that Women policy makers are not only the voice of general public but a guarantee for gender responsive policy making.

In the current situation SDPI continues to strive for a better future for Pakistan by helping advocate evidence based policy making. For the purpose experts at SDPI have been rigorously involving partners from civil society, academia, media and government to identify lacunas and give policy inputs based on hard core research.

While examining the challenge, SDPI initiated a Council for Women Parliamentarians (CWP) with the realization that in Pakistan policy makers lack research support for formulating evidence based policies. They are often trapped and burdened with multifaceted issues. There is dearth of research evidence available on issues of national concern.

Through this forum, SDPI engages itself in regularly sharing of research for supporting the women parliamentarians in formulating informed policies and drafting and moving forward legislation/bill.
