57th Meeting of the SDPI’s
Study Group on Information Technology and Telecom to Discuss
Adoption of 3G/4G Technology by
Pakistan
Almost three years
ago, Pakistan was ready to adopt 3G technology and the Pakistan
Telecommunications Authority (PTA) was all set to roll it out. PTA organized a
number of seminars to create awareness on the benefits Pakistan would be able
to achieve in terms of enhanced growth, increased bandwidth and multiple mobile
applications it would have facilitated.
Pakistan is amongst the very few countries which are yet to adopt this
technology. Had we rolled it out three years ago, it would have made a
significant positive impact on Pakistan’s economic growth. We have lost
valuable time. What have been the losses and what would we gain by the overly
delayed adoption? What would be the future impact on broadband subscriber systems?
To discuss the above very important issues with a focus on “The Broadband
Challenges for Pakistan—forthcoming licensing for spectrum in cellular”
and come up with meaningful recommendations, a meeting of the Sustainable
Development Policy Institute’s (SDPI”s) Study Group on Information Technology
and Telecommunication has been scheduled. In such meetings, we try to bring
together relevant stake holders and policy makers on a neutral platform. Please
see attached aims and objectives of SDPI’s Study Group on IT and Telecom.
