DDF Karachi: Transport, Security and Revenue Concerns in Main Vegetable Market

Mar 19 - Mar 20

9:00AM to 4:30PM

Mehran Hotel, Sharah-e-Faisal Karachi

Karachi
has only one vegetable market, which supplies vegetables to retailers in the
city. The market is located at a far off place from the main city, due to which
robbery incidents are a routine matter. Retailers and at times customers are
looted on their way to the vegetable market. Trucks carrying vegetables are
also robbed. On the other hand, Bhatta (blackmail money) Mafia is also operational
in the market, which impacts the earnings of shopkeepers. Consequently,
retailers are forced to sell and supply vegetables at expensive rates..? On the other hand, the market is run
privately, hence the owners are building places for their residence or office
thus reducing the area for market purpose.

District
government or police is least concerned with the security of the market. Prices
of vegetables have increased due to the negligence of authorities and losses
incurred by the retailers.

For cooperative
action plan, the participants formed two committees to analyze, evaluate and
proceed to resolve the conflicting issues of the vegetable market. The internal
committee was named ?Sabzi Mandi Committee (Vegetable Market Committee)? while
the external committee was named ?Shehri Bachat Committee (City Saving
Committee)?. The Shehri Bachat Committee will be responsible for bridging the
gap between the district government and people, ensuring the economical rates
of fruits and vegetable within the city, identifying the appropriate places for
vegetable market, and working to set the mechanism for the better provision of
vegetable to the buyers.? Whereas, the
Sabzi Mandi Committee will look after the law and order situation in the
market, and ensure the provision of basic facility at vegetable market.
