DDF Larkana: Increased Number of Honor Killings

Mar 25 - Mar 26

9:00AM to 4:30PM

Hotel Sapna Inn, Larkana

Honour
killing is a type of violence that is being practiced for decades in South
Asia, especially in Pakistan. It is locally known as Karo-Kari, which is a
compound word. Its literal meanings are ?black male? (Karo) and ?black female?
(Kari). Once a women is labeled as a Kari, her family is forced to kill her and
the man (karo) in order to restore the family honour.

Keeping
in view the increased rate of honour killings in Larkna, local leaders decided to
utilize this forum to hold a dialogue on this issue. In Larkana, various women have
become the victims of honour killing, causing conflicts among families, castes
and? communities. The major causes of honour
killing (Karo-Kari) are lack of women education as well as awareness and
advocacy programmes, feudal system, no proper implementation of law, lack of women
capacity building and religious education.

Participants
were of the view that this issue could be controlled while taking legal strict
action , conducting awareness raising programmes at grass roots level,
implementing and amending laws regarding honour killing and promoting more
research in this area.

For
cooperative action plan, a committee was formed, which will organize the
awareness programmes at grass roots level and will develop a strategy to
enhance the capacity of women. The committee will engage a professional
psychologist for the purpose, and increase awareness about imparting religious
education among younger generation besides conducting seminars on honour killing.
