Discrimination against women in Pakistan is deeply rooted within society
and has evolved into the shape of cultural and traditional customs
which have made violence against women (VAW) a norm. Ending violence
against women is not a cry for war against men; it is a struggle against
misguided perceptions and ignorant beliefs. To this end, it is
important to highlight the need and potential that men possess in
alleviating the current predicament of women in Pakistan. Changing
behavioral patterns requires sensitizing men regarding the plight of
women and their rights.
SDPI is concluding a research project for the UNDP which documented 40
cases of men’s positive role and community ownership practices in
addressing violence against women. A large theme among these cases was
the use of media to initiate action, such as having a case publicized in
the media to compel the police to file the FIR or to ensure due process
in the court system.
In order to provide a platform on the issue, the speakers will share
their views and experiences on “Role of Media in Addressing Violence
Against Women”.
