Research Fellow
Dr. Kashif Majeed Salik is a Research Fellow at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute and holds a PhD in human geography from the University of Southampton, UK. For the past two decades, he has dedicated himself to serving governmental and non-governmental international organizations, focusing on climate change impacts and risk assessments across a range of critical areas. These include food security, water management, infrastructure, migration, urbanization, coastal ecosystem management, sustainable development, and policy design. As both an agricultural economist and human geographer, his research delves into the evolving dynamics of human-environment interactions and their impact on rural livelihoods.
Additionally, he specializes in research on climate change, particularly identifying adaptation strategies through climate-smart agricultural technologies, irrigation management, and agro-digitalization. In his roles as both country and team lead, he prioritizes research-policy engagement and integration to mitigate climate change-induced extreme impacts and associated disaster risks. Simultaneously, he strives to enhance resilience, adaptive capacity, climate justice, and diplomacy for a more sustainable society.
Most importantly, in recent years during his PhD and other research projects, he has gained an in-depth understanding of migration in rural areas. He focused on migration as an adaptation to climate change and as a hope for rural populations for their well-being and growth. This was achieved through interviewing and surveying rural households, utilizing intra-household and intersectionality approaches based on gender, social status, and economic position. Moreover, his extensive experience encompasses various aspects of project management, including research proposal writing, securing funding, research design and analysis, and data collection using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches.
He has also led several collaborative research projects across Asia and Africa and published more than 40 research publications, including journal articles, book chapters, policy briefs, and reports. He is currently serving as an associate editor for the Earth Systems and Environment Journal. He has also carried out policy-oriented work for various governmental and international agencies, including the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) in the UK, the International Development Research Centre in Canada, the International Organization for Migration, and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.
