LOCAL RESOURCE MOBILIZATION FOR CBOS IN DISTRICT CHAKWAL
Community Based Organizations (CBOs) must focus mobilization of domestic resources through promotion of volunteerism, networking and collaboration, information exchange, lobbying and advocacy, said Gulbaz Ali Khan, Senior Research Associate, Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) while presenting the findings of a recently conducted joint research study of Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and Plan-Pakistan on “local resource mobilization for CBOs in district Chakwal” in a validation workshop held in Chakwal on Thursday.
Maqssod Jan, Research Coordinator, Plan-Pakistan, Moeed Khan, Advisor Plan-Pakistan and Zeeshan Ahmad, Incharge Project Management Unit (PMU) Chakwal, Plan-Pakistan along with the representatives of twenty five local CBO’s from the district Chakwal attended the workshop.
Participants were briefed about the results of research study and were encouraged to share their understnading and experiences of working with communities. The study oberves the community-based organizations are generally dependent on foreign aid and they die out with project completion while facing difficulties in organizational sustainability for long term benefits to the individuals and communities at the large. One of the key objectives of the study is to ascertain the existing situation of CBOs with regard to their sustainability and long-term benifits to the communiteis they work with while comprehensively exploring the potential of domestic resources which may be tapped by the local CBOs in the Chakwal district.
The research study, provides in-depth baseline information and identifies the potential sources including corporate sector, business community, mining industry, trusts, foundations, individual philanthropists, PIRS and local government. All these sources have diverse potential which may be realized by the CBOs by adopting appropriate communication and advocacy strategies and creating networks and building alliances.
The study highlighted the need to develop a network of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in the district for raising collective voices and sharing knowledge. It has been suggested to develop a dedicated advocacy campaign for reaching and influencing the policy makers.
Based upon the findings of the study, Plan Pakistan partners may start “Volunteer Campaign” in the district with objective to take as many as volunteers to help CBOs to accumulate appropriate human resources for the resource mobilization campaign.
SDPI will provide technical support to the interested organizations in developing the advocacy campaign and will train the staff with financial help from Plan Pakistan. It is highlighted that dissemination of the research findings must be done at immediate basis to create awareness among the stakeholders. Whatever the research is conducted, it must be shared with wider community for knowledge sharing. It will also build knowledge base of the stakeholders in the existing resources in the district which may tapped by the community organizations by adopting different fund raising strategies.
