SDPI Press Release (January 16, 2014)
“Sustainable
Development Policy Institute has proactively taken up a charge of a
campaign of saving forests through REDD+. SDPI Advocacy & Policy
Outreach Department has committed its full support to Climate Change
Division (CCD) in this noble cause” said representative of SDPI Advocacy
Team.
Pakistan
has won a 3.8 m $ to get ready for full implementation of REDD+ a
mechanism under which developing countries are paid cash while saving
forests. This win is the aftermath of a long process of capacity
building consultations and getting provincial consensus to go ahead for
the competition announced by the World Bank in Geneva.
Pakistan’s
case was pleaded by a two-member delegation, comprising of Syed Nasir
Mehmood, Inspector General of Forests and Naeem Ashraf Raja, Director
Biodiversity Programme, both from Climate Change Division (CCD). SDPI a
long partner of the Climate Change Division on forests welcomed this
success.
Syed
Nasir Mehmood said that implementing REDD+ in an inclusive manner is a
transparent and real challenge. SDPI with its immense power over media,
political decision makers and think tanks has immense responsibility to
make it a success.
“The professional approach of SDPI’s outreach
team is a welcome omen in the first week of 2014 where we shall be
seeing leaders of all political parties sitting at SDPI to provide
support to REDD+ regardless of any political affiliation” he added.
Dr.
Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director, SDPI appreciated the untiring
efforts of CCD, which has helped Pakistan in securing REDD+ funding. “SDPI would be happy to support in all possible manners” he said.
