SDPI to carry out research on integrative medicine

Development Policy Institute Executive Director Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri
has said that SDPI would carry out further research on integrative
medicine for recommending this treatment to the health authorities in
the country.

Dr Suleri was speaking at a ceremony here to
sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Pakistan Association
of Integrative Medicine (PAIM), Islamabad, to undertake joint research
on integrative medicine to promote it as a formal means of treatment and
healthcare in Pakistan.

Integrative medicine combines
conventional methods with scientific evidence-based alternative medicine
to improve patient care. Integrative physicians incorporate scientific
and evidence-based treatment options including immunotherapy,
genetherapy, physiotherapy and psychological treatment while supporting
orthodox practice.

Citing the example of the medicine sector in USA, Dr Suleri said that US Federal Drug Agency approved gene therapy medicine.

Association of Integrative Medicine President Dr Mobashir Ahmed Bhatti
said that integrative medicine is the health care process, which creates
a seamless engagement by patients and care-givers of the full range of
physical, psychological, social, preventive and therapeutic factors
known to be effective and necessary for the achievement of optimal
health throughout the life span.

He asked for a full
support of SDPI to develop research and assessment of the product before
providing it to the nation and also educate our professionals. Also
present on the occasion were Prof Ding- gang Li, Director, The Centre of
Gene Therapy & Surgical Oncology, Beijing, and Dr Yu Deng Wei,
General Manager, Beijing Show Cogent Bio-Technology Company.
Participants in their comments suggested that integrative medicine
should have a proper space in curriculum and researchers should also
share success stories of this procedure.
