Social justice, inclusive political process pre-requisites for effective governance
Social Justice, inclusive political process and motivated citizenry are the pre-requisites for achieving the goal of effective governance, said Dr. Shahrukh Rafi Khan in a special lecture organized by Sustainable Development Policy Institute in collaboration with American Institute of Policy Studies here on Friday.
The very basics for social justice are building relationship of an effective government with motivated citizenry, making political process inclusive, reducing cost of doing businesses and catering to the basic human freedoms and needs with a participatory approach, he said.
Dr. Khan who is a former executive director of SDPI said that by building equity and social justice a country could catch up to the growth targets, hence achieve the salient features of good governance.
Referring to his recent study, he was of the opinion that amid increasing gap between rich and poor, the Asian countries needed to move toward a process of incentives and actions leading to effective government if they really wanted to get their development strategies implemented.
As a discussant Dr. Tariq Benuri, the founder executive director of SDPI, said that Asian counties are compared in 1960s and then in 1980s on the basis of equity, education and health but the ranking is not changed much.
