Tributes paid to an ‘icon of community mobilization’
Wednesday, November 26, 2014 – Islamabad—Glowing
tributes were paid to the living legend of our times, Shoaib Sultan
Khan, for his meritorious services in the field of development at grass
roots level. Speakers addressing a ceremony ‘An Evening with Legend’
organized by Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) here on
Tuesday spoke highly of Shoaib Sultan Khan the icon of community
mobilization, a development practitioner, founder of Agha Khan Rural
Support Programme and South Asian Poverty Alleviation Programme.
Shams-ul-Mulk,
former caretaker chief minister of KP, presided over the ceremony. He
eulogized the contribution of Mr Khan in rehabilitation and mobilization
of the affected people of Ghazi-Brotha project.
Dr Shahida
Jafrey, former vice-chancellor of Balochistan Women University, Quetta,
said that Shoaib made villagers learn how to stand on their feet.
Shafqat Kakakhel, the former ambassador, said Shoaib was a loyal
disciple of Akhtar Hameed Khan, who changed the life of millions living
in Komilla and Orangi through his doctrine of community mobilization. He
said that Shoaib worked beyond national boundaries and his work in
South Asia recognizes his passion for alleviating poverty through
collective action. Kishwar Naheed, the renowned poetess and women rights
activist, said that Shoaib has led people of Gilgit to develop and
improve their lives and surroundings. One could see reflections of Che
Guevara and Mao Tse Tung in his personality, she said, adding that
Shoaib is known and recognized for his neutrality, humility and
dedication for the marginalized.
PML-N MNA Daniyal Aziz said that
Shoaib helped improve the life of a number of vulnerable communities
while adopting a systematic way of change.
