UNDP, SDPI JOINTLY ORGANIZE NATIONAL CONSULTATION ON PAKISTAN?S PREPARATIONS FOR UN CONFERENCE ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ON SEPT. 12
United Nation Development Program UNDP & Sustainable Development Policy Institute SDPI will jointly organize National Consultation on Pakistan’s preparations for UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD)/Rio+20” on September 12. A UNDP press release Saturday said UNCSD/ Rio+20 Conference will be held in June 2012 to promote renewed political commitment for better results.
Advisor on Climate Change & Development, Planning Commission, Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad, Co-Chair One UN, Environment/ Country Director UNDP, Toshihiro Tanaka, Executive Director, SDPI, Dr Abid Q. Suleri, Country Director, World Bank Rachid Benmessaoud will address Consultation which follows provincial consultations in Lahore & Karachi will engage stakeholder government, private sector, NGOs, think-tanks, civil society in assessing progress to sustainable development in Pakistan. It will identify gaps, emerging challenges and give recommendations on how UNCSD/Rio +20 Conference could promote renewed political commitment for better results. It will address two major themes – green economy in context of sustainable development, poverty eradication, institutional framework for sustainable development at local national, global levels. A national report which will serve as basis for Pakistan government inputs to UNCSD Secretariat in advance of negotiations on outcome of conference due to commence in January 2012.
