Program/Project Rational and Background

South Asia is extremely vulnerable to natural disasters, and a significant portion is exposed to more than one type of hazard. Between 1990 and 2008, more than 750 million people—50% of South Asia’s

population—were affected by at least one type of disaster, resulting in almost 230,000 deaths and about $45 billion in damages.

This project calls for finding solutions that are based on equitable, informed and inclusive Urban transformation, where national and individual growth can supplement resource regeneration and maintain ecological integrity of the cities in South Asia.

Key Objectives -

* Analyze current policies and civil society discourse on urban development vis-a-vis mitigation and resilience to understand the existing gaps and challenges

* Build Capacity of civil society on issues of Urban Resilience, Adaptation & Mitigation policies that work for all.

* Policy advocacy at national, regional and international level CSOs to influence ambitious climate targets, budgets and programmes on green, resilient and inclusive urban development.

Key components –

1. Research and Advocacy – Launching Reports, consultations etc.

2. CSO and CBO outreach – consultations and joint planning etc. engaging CSOs and CBOs in urban sector

3. Capacity building and joint advocacy - Trainings and workshops at local, national, regional and international levels.
