Climate change is one of the key challenges of our time, and Pakistan is particularly vulnerable to its impacts. Rising temperatures, changing weather patterns, and extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are affecting millions of people across the country. In this context, social media has emerged as a powerful tool for climate advocacy, enabling individuals and organizations to raise awareness, share information, and mobilize support for climate action.

During the devastating floods that hit Pakistan in 2022, social media became the first source of information for many people. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram were used to share real-time updates, call for help, and coordinate relief efforts. Twitter spaces were conducted to create awareness regarding on-ground situation in the flood affected areas. This highlights the potential of social media to not only raise awareness about climate change but also to drive immediate action in response to its impacts.

This seminar will explore the role of social media in climate advocacy in Pakistan, with a focus on the strategies and tactics that have proven most effective. We will also examine the challenges and opportunities of using social media for climate advocacy, including issues of misinformation, polarization, and platform algorithm bias.

Following questions will be discussed in the seminar:

  • How can the government work with social media platforms to promote accurate and evidence-based information on climate change in Pakistan?
  • What role can civil society organizations and other stakeholders play in shaping climate advocacy through social media in Pakistan?
  • Can social media be used to facilitate public participation and input into the policymaking process related to climate change in Pakistan?
  • How can we measure the impact of social media campaigns on climate advocacy in Pakistan, and what metrics should be used?
  • Is there a possibility for the government to work with social media platforms to promote accurate and evidence-based information on climate change in Pakistan?
  • How can Twitter be used to bridge the gap between climate science and public understanding in Pakistan?
  • How can Twitter be used to encourage behavior change among individuals and businesses in Pakistan to promote sustainability and combat climate change?
