Policy Recommendations

Transforming Food Systems to Meet the Emerging Challenges to Food Security
  • There is need for cooperation between academia, civil society, government institutes, and research organisations for efficient food management throughout the value chain.
  • Capacity building is needed for the farmers to understand the consumption preferences of their target consumers in order to diversify their production accordingly to reduce biodiversity loss in food and agriculture.
  • Strengthening the private sector, especially Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs), can play a vital role in improving the supply chain for healthy food. This will help scale up the consumption of nutrition-dense staples and encourage modern farming through water productivity known as ‘more crop per drop.’
  • Policies that encourage farmers to diversify food production to enhance farm income and to meet the demand of domestic and international consumers, need to be formulated and adopted.
  • There is an urgent need to devise coherent national level food plans to meet food security needs.
