The recommendations below should be implemented to bolster Pakistan’s resilience against the impacts of climate change on food and nutrition security, emphasising practical solutions such as risk insurance, early warning systems, community engagement, and innovative agri-technologies:
o Incentivise climate-resilient agricultural practices with special focus on the use of drought-resistant crops, advanced irrigation techniques, and the development of climate-smart agricultural technologies.
o Launch government programmes that motivate farmers to diversify their crops, thereby reducing the risk of crop failure due to climate events and enhancing food security through the availability of a variety of crops.
o Develop and implement climate risk insurance schemes for farmers to safeguard against losses due to extreme weather events. This financial support can help maintain agricultural productivity and food security even in adverse climatic conditions.
o Enhance early warning systems to provide timely information on climate threats to agriculture. This will enable farmers and communities to prepare and respond effectively to potential risks.
o Implement community-based adaptation programmes that focus on local knowledge and practices. Engage communities in developing and applying locally-suited strategies to manage climate risks and sustain food and nutrition security.
o Invest in Research and Development (R&D) for new agricultural technologies that are specifically tailored to Pakistan’s changing climate conditions. This includes the development of climate-adaptive crop varieties and sustainable farming methods.
