Ambassador Shafqat Kakakhel is a retired senior Pakistani diplomat and a former high official of the UN and Chairperson, Board of Governors, Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), Pakistan.
Ambassador Kakakhel served in Pakistan diplomatic missions, including as Deputy High Commissioner in India. He was Ambassador to Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia and Permanent Representative of Pakistan to UNEP and UN Habitat (1994-1998). He also served as Deputy Executive Director, UNEP, with the rank of UN Assistant Secretary General (1998-2007).
Since retirement, Ambassador Kakakhel has contributed to promotion of sustainable development in Pakistan, serving as member of committees advising the Government and heading the governing bodies of SDPI, Mountain & Glacier Protection Organization (MGPO), and the Civil Society Coalition for Climate Change.
