Speakers at an SDPI debate said new administrative units could directly benefit citizens. They also called for stronger local governments and improved governance.
The Sustainable Development Policy Institute hosted the discussion on new provinces and administrative units. Participants discussed decentralisation, financial autonomy, governance and distribution of powers.
PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira said Pakistan faces challenges involving resources, minerals, water and power distribution. He stressed strengthening local governments while maintaining national cohesion.
Kaira said political parties should work within the constitutional framework. He also called for public participation and stronger institutions to improve democratic governance.
Meanwhile, Barrister Saif supported creating new provinces and proposed a commission to build political consensus. He said stronger local governments were essential for addressing citizens’ problems.
Health Minister Mustafa Kamal said four chief ministers received Rs8.884 trillion. He questioned mechanisms for transferring provincial resources to districts and supported administrative reforms.
Salman Akram Raja said existing problems must be addressed before creating new provinces. He also called for strengthening local governments and transferring powers to lower administrative levels.
