Pakistan must not miss ‘Green Hydrogen’ revolution in energy transition: Experts

ISLAMABAD – Experts at the seminar on Green Hydrogen generation prospects of the chip in the country’s just energy transition emphasized that Pakistan amid the growing trend of non-carbon eco-friendly fuels should not miss the opportunity to achieve ot the clean energy change.

The Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI)’s Network for Clean Energy Transition (NCET) organized a seminar titled “Public Private Dialogue titled ‘Exploring the Potential of Green Hydrogen in hard to abate Sectors of Pakistan” here.

Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director, SDPI in his opening remarks said that hydrogen as an element is very reactive in nature that avoids isolation in nature and forms bonds with other elements carbon or oxygen making this is complicated by its nature.

Dr Suleri said, “About 90 million tons of carbon are produced annually in the world which causes 800 million tons of CO2 emissions to be produced. However, there is a worldwide debate to make this production eco-friendly but the amount of energy required for this is a cost intensive business.

He explained that hydrogen is different in nature which is blue hydrogen produced by splitting methane gas molecules, green hydrogen by hydrolysis of water and pink hydrogen produced by nuclear energy sources.

The SDPI Executive Director emphasized that the major challenge is the availability of electrolyzers to produce hydrogen while the US produces electrolyzers around the world and in the region India and China are trying to produce efficient hydrolyzers.

Greenko, he said that an electrolyzer made by the Indian company, students and researchers working on the subject should explore its model to find out through it for efficient hydrogen production solutions.
