National Precision Agriculture Blueprint Study: Needs Assessment and Adoptability Pathways

...

The agricultural sector plays a crucial role in Pakistan's economy, providing food security, creating employment opportunities, and reducing poverty in rural areas. Despite its significant contribution to the country's GDP, the growth rate of the sector has been impeded by several factors, such as shrinking arable land, climate change, water scarcity, and migration of rural labor to urban areas. Therefore, it is essential to adopt innovative approaches and technologies to increase agricultural productivity.

With strong links to the secondary and tertiary sectors, the agricultural sector can play a critical role in promoting economic growth and sustainable livelihoods. However, the traditional farming methods prevalent in Pakistan are unsustainable and inefficient, leading to increased costs and reduced profitability. Farmers require proper crop scheduling and access to new technologies to improve their agricultural practices and reduce their reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

Precision agriculture (P-Ag) technologies, such as ICTs, IoT, mobile applications, GPS/GIS, and UAVs, can effectively assist farmers in decision-making related to fertilizers and seed application, pest control, irrigation, and machinery operation. For instance, rice production, one of Pakistan's primary crops, faces significant challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and insect-pest infestation. P-Ag technologies can greatly improve economic efficiency and rice crop production by providing farmers with real-time information about soil conditions, weather forecasts, and fertilizer and pesticide application.

The federal and provincial governments of Pakistan have a vital role to play in ensuring food security and increasing agricultural productivity through the adoption of P-Ag technologies and financial inclusion for farmers. The Agriculture Transformation Plan's 'Mechanization' component provides an opportunity to achieve this goal, promoting agricultural growth and increasing productivity levels comparable to those of other regional and developed countries.
