Executive Director
Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri is the Executive Director of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI). He is a leading expert on sustainable development, the political economy of public policy, food security, and climate change. He serves on leading international and national policy forums and has represented Pakistan in numerous official and civil society delegations worldwide.
Dr Suleri currently sits on the Advisory Council of the Asian Development Bank Institute. He chairs the Board of Directors of the National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) and serves on the Pakistan Climate Change Council, the Board of Directors of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), and the Board of Governors of the National School of Public Policy.
In 2024, he worked with UNFCCC COP29 President as a member of the International Advisory Committee of COP29. Previously, he served three terms (2013–2022) on the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council/National Economic Advisory Council, two terms (2013–2022) on the National Advisory Council of the Planning Commission of Pakistan, and as Coordinator of the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Transformation Plan (2021–2022). His earlier roles include membership of the Punjab Government’s Vice Chancellors’ Search Committee for Agricultural Universities, the Finance Minister’s Task Force on Social Safety Nets (2016–2017), the Board of Directors of Pakistan State Oil (2009–2011), and four judicial commissions on environmental issues formed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Islamabad High Court, and Lahore High Court.
He is a founding member of the Permanent Organizing Committee of the South Asia Economic Summit and has served on the Advisory Board of the CAREC (Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation) Think Tank Network. He twice co-chaired the Board of Climate Action Network, South Asia, and was Pakistan’s lead expert for the World Economic Forum’s “Transformation Mapping” initiative.
Dr Suleri has participated in major international platforms, including the UN Sustainable Development Summit, UNFCCC Conferences of Parties (COPs), and WTO Ministerial Conferences. A sought-after speaker, he regularly delivers lectures on sustainable development to career civil servants, military officers, and parliamentarians.
An accomplished writer, he contributes to academic journals and mainstream media. He is Editor-in-Chief of SDPI’s peer-reviewed Journal of Development Policy, Research, and Practice, and Series Editor of Springer’s South Asia Economic and Policy Studies.
Dr Suleri holds a PhD in Food Security from the University of Greenwich, UK.
