Introduction:
The ESCAP and its partner institution have joined forces to enhance sustainable energy development in Pakistan by leveraging the findings from the recently published SDG7 Roadmap. Following their successful strategy in other countries, the collaboration seeks to develop evidence and policy recommendations specific to sustainable energy in Pakistan. The primary objective is to support ESCAP in implementing two research projects that align with the SDG7 Roadmap and foster a green, affordable, and inclusive energy transition in disadvantaged regions of the country. Through research and evidence-based dialogues, the projects aim to deploy sustainable energy technologies, offer actionable recommendations for green and affordable energy services, and ensure gender-positive impacts. This collaboration signifies a continuous commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and driving positive change in Pakistan's energy landscape.
Objectives & Activities:
1. Fostering Green, Affordable, and Inclusive Energy Transition in Impoverished Regions of Pakistan:
The research study aims to tackle energy poverty and inequality by exploring opportunities to deploy sustainable energy technologies in impoverished regions of Pakistan. It seeks to provide actionable recommendations related to green, affordable, and inclusive energy services in these areas. The study will involve structured Public Private Dialogues (PPDs) with participation from various stakeholders, including the public sector (both national and provincial), community-based organizations, civil society, private sector firms, and emerging consumer associations in the energy space.
Through evidence-based presentations, the dialogues will set agendas to foster productive discussions. The research's recommendations will encompass technological, financial, and regulatory measures to promote affordable and eco-friendly energy solutions, targeting both residential and industrial consumers. By engaging a diverse network of stakeholders, the study aims to ensure a comprehensive approach to sustainable energy development in these vulnerable regions.
2. Phasing Out the Use of Coal in Pakistan:
This research project focuses on assessing the role of coal in Pakistan's energy system and identifying pathways to phase out its usage in line with sustainable development scenarios. The study will analyze the financial implications of transitioning away from coal power and propose policy and financial approaches to manage such transitions effectively.
To support its findings, the study will conduct a granular literature research and analyze data related to national energy policies, markets, and investments. It will consider various scenarios for the future use of coal in both power generation and industry. Additionally, the research will involve quantitative analysis to understand the economic and financial impacts of phasing out coal in the energy sector.
Collaborating with a network of regional energy experts and organizations experienced in coal phase-out will ensure valuable insights and expertise in shaping the study's conclusions. By taking a comprehensive approach and considering the complexities of transitioning away from coal, the research aims to contribute to Pakistan's sustainable energy goals and environmental commitments.
Key Outcomes:
1. Research report on “Fostering Green, Affordable, and Inclusive Energy Transition in Impoverished Regions of Pakistan”
2. Research report on “Phasing Out the Use of Coal in Pakistan”
3. Public Private Dialogue with relevant experts including government officials to discuss the research questions posed under the “Fostering Green, Affordable, and Inclusive Energy Transition in Impoverished Regions of Pakistan” research effort.
