Impact of Climate Change on Mangroves Ecosystem in South Asia

Introduction: The study examines different climatic and hydrological factors under climate change scenarios, and assesses their linkages and interactions with mangrove ecosystems. Vulnerability assessment for socio-economic variables, indicators and processes, which are affecting mangroves ecosystem sustainability in South Asia is being carried out.

Objectives:

• To develop necessary framework for adaptation/recommendations with respect to policy and institutional intervention for mangroves' sustainability and development.
• To raise awareness among local and national level policy and decision makers about the potential impact of climate change on mangroves ecosystem

Activities:

• Climate change scenarios are being developed in collaboration with the Climatology Section of GCISC using regional climate models.
• Water flow scenarios are being developed using literature review, expert opinion and hydrological and hydrodynamic models.
• Socio-economic vulnerability and Environmental Impact Assessment is being carried out using GIS/RS techniques.
• Institutional analysis and Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Vulnerability Assessment of Mangrove ecosystem due to climate change are also being undertaken.
• Based on the above analysis and data, two research papers have been produced. At a later stage a report comprising findings and policy recommendations from the three countries will be drafted. Results of the overall study and policy recommendations will be shared with the policy makers and relevant stakeholders at national and regional workshops.
