Pakistan’s National State of Environment Report (NSOER)

Building the Evidence Base for Pakistan’s Environmental Future

The Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) is preparing Pakistan’s National State of Environment Report (NSOER) in collaboration with the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA).

The report represents a renewed national assessment of Pakistan’s environmental conditions after a decade-long reporting gap. It brings together evidence on the forces driving environmental change, the pressures being placed on natural systems, the present state of the environment, resulting impacts, and the policy and institutional responses required.

Using the internationally recognised Drivers–Pressures–State–Impact–Response (DPSIR) framework, the assessment covers major dimensions of Pakistan’s environment, including air quality, water resources, agriculture, disaster risk, environmental health, governance and accountability.

The process combines evidence with consultation, bringing researchers, public institutions, environmental experts, civil society and young people into the development of the assessment. A dedicated youth engagement process is also feeding into the national report and its youth-focused edition.

Recognised in Parliament

On 10 September 2026, the National Assembly Standing Committee on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination was informed by Pak-EPA that the National Environment Report was being prepared in collaboration with SDPI. The Committee was informed that the previous report had been published in 2016 and that the new report was scheduled for publication by 15 December 2026.

The assignment reflects SDPI’s continuing role in connecting independent research, environmental evidence and national policymaking.
