With a coastal area of 1,050 km including the continental shelf, Pakistan is blessed with significant ‘blue’ natural resources. Pakistan has extended coastline, marine resources, harbours, sea trade, and maritime professionals for the development of the maritime sector. Pakistan is estimated to have the 6th largest mangrove area in the world. According to the World Bank, the blue economy is estimated to contribute around US$ 1 billion (8% of the national GDP). The bulk of this contribution is in the form of fisheries, coastal tourism, and maritime revenue.
On the advice of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, the potential, issues, and challenges with regards to the blue economy were deliberated and a report is prepared. In this backdrop, SDPI in collaboration with Bank of Punjab is organizing the report launch and hold discussion among the experts from the industry.
