Project Introduction: Pakistan is also among the top ten countries in the world with highest tobacco use and vaping is on the rise. Successful campaigns for reducing tobacco use shows that increased taxation, PHW/GHW on tobacco packages increase risk perceptions, reduce the appeal of tobacco use and promote smoking cessation. Additionally, major problems in Pakistan include lack of understanding and absence of policy regarding New Novel Tobacco Products (such as E-Cigs, HnBs, ANDs and ANNDs etc.).
Through this project SDPI, in collaboration with the partners aspires to facilitate the TCPs and TCLs regarding GHW/PHW, smokeless tobacco, Novel tobacco products and tobacco taxation. Working closely with the government, including TCC at the MoNHSR&C on policies related to four major areas of tobacco control. The project seeks to achieve the undermentioned outcomes through building up on existing network of experts from relevant organizations, policy circles, and other stakeholders, building the capacity and training using print, electronic and social media and seminars/meetings.
SDPI will be continuing its policy efforts in order to assist the Federal Government, MONHSR&C and its TCCs (national and provincial) for strengthening the tobacco control environment in Pakistan in line with MPOWER. SDPI will be building capacity of relevant organizations and stakeholders pertinent to policy development and implementation, particularly, on smokeless tobacco, GHW/PHW, and novel tobacco products (E-Cigs, Vapes, HnB ANDS and ANNDS etc.), smokeless tobacco products, and taxation. SDPI will be supporting the government’s efforts at national and sub-national to curbing the challenges including E-cigarettes/vaping in the post COVID-19 environment through orientations and seminars.
Project Objectives:
Objective 1: Assisting the MNHS/TCC to manage existing and emerging challenges for developing Pakistan’s strategic policy direction and guidelines on GHW/PHW, Smokeless Tobacco Control (SLTC) and Next-Generation tobacco Products (NGTPs) including E-Cigs/ENDS/ANDS/HnBs etc.
Objective 2: Collate evidences on the gaps in existing TC framework in line with MPWER of WHO-FCTC commitments by Pakistan,
Objective 3: Facilitating the national and provincial govts in sustainable tobacco control initiative through system strengthening and building capacity of stakeholders in post-COVID-19 environment.
